For the final episode in our series on Happiness I wanted to share one powerful tool and to ask if you’d join my dream team.

Journaling

I’ve always journaled, and still own every one I’ve ever completed (the teenage years make for cringe-inducing reading!) but it wasn’t until I was alone on the Atlantic for 111 days that I began to understand how powerful it can be. I’ve experimented with loads of different styles over the years, from free-form cathartic writing through to far more structured approaches, and have found there are a few things that really work and have made all the difference in my own successes – both in my home life and professional life.

Step 1. Choose Your Attitude & list the benefits – after all, it’s the one thing we have a choice about.

Step 2. Gratitude – in the video I share the huge effect that this practice is shown to have on our satisfaction levels, as well as some really practical tips on how to fit it into your everyday life.

Step 3. Future Truths – this is the hardest part, but it’s also by far the most powerful. Last year my Atlantic row story got bought by a group of Hollywood producers, and I was interviewed on one of my favourite podcasts – and I’m convinced that I owe a huge amount of these successes to my habit of Future Truth journaling. It can be a bit daunting at first so in the Show I share 4 strategies to pick and choose from so that you always have something to write, no matter what your mood is or what other factors are affecting your day. To some of you it might sound a bit bonkers but do check out my video and then give it a go – what have you got to lose?

This is where you come in

For the last few months we’ve been writing and designing a Choose Your Attitude Journal – it’s nearly ready to be sent to the printers but I need a few of you to join my dream team and help me to do some testing! If you’d like a sneak peak of the Journal pages then hit the button below to join my private Facebook Group, where you can download some sample pages and a guide on how to fill out the Journal. All I ask for in return is your honest feedback!

I’ll be posting in the group every day or so, so please come on over, take the CYA Journal for a spin and let me know your thoughts.

Feeling cynical?

A study into the health benefits of writing about intensely positive experiences examined 90 undergraduate students who were split into two groups. The first group wrote about an intensely positive experience each day for three consecutive days. The second group wrote about a control topic.

Three months later, the students who wrote about positive experiences had better mood levels, fewer visits to the health centre, and experienced fewer illnesses. WHAT?! That’s incredible. Three months later, still having better health after just three days of writing.

This is why I am so passionate about the Choose Your Attitude Journal practice that I do each morning. To find out what I write about during my morning routine and how it has helped me to achieve more than I ever dreamt possible, just check out this week’s Choose Your Attitude Show.

I urge you to try this method of journaling for a week and see if it makes a difference. After all, if we always do what we’ve always done, we’ll always get what we’ve always got.

Bestest,

Debra
