This week’s Choose Your Attitude Show is about something that I am truly passionate about, and that’s getting our children off their screens and outside. Of course, I always knew that I wanted my children to find the same sense of freedom & awe in the Great Outdoors as I have, but it became truly urgent to me the day after my youngest daughter Molly had been born.

Picture the scene:

In the night, I had had an unexpected and very swift home delivery (ably assisted by my husband Tim!)

Almost-2-year-old Heidi had been peacefully asleep in her bedroom throughout.

The next morning we brought Heidi into our room to meet her new baby sister.

She gently stroked her sister’s head, looked up at me with her big blue eyes and said,

“Mummy – watch Peppa Pig on your phone now.”

Instead of the awe of new creation, my toddler had reached for a screen. For me it became a tangible start point for one of the greatest challenges us parents and grandparents of post millennial children face – the monitoring and policing of our children’s screen time.

But I don’t want to demonise technology – it’s a fact of life for all of us. In this week’s Show, I explain how to use tech as an opportunity rather than an opponent.

It’s not about the fight to turn the iPad off, it’s a challenge to us – as parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles and friends  – to step up our game and use the tools available to us.

So fear not, rather than just berating ourselves with awful stats about how addictive our phones are, I’ve got some super simple ideas for how to inspire a curiosity and love of nature in your little people.

As we head into the last few weeks of my year-long commitment to The Choose Your Attitude Show, please let me know if there are any topics that you’d like me to squeeze in to December! And don’t forget to Choose Your Attitude – after all, it’s the one thing we have a choice about.
